Vernell G. Brown, lovingly known as Vernie Mae, Big V, Sweet Honey, Verntiss, and many other affectionate nicknames, passed away on January 8, 2025, at Sentara Obici Hospital; just one day shy of her 88th birthday.
Born and raised in Smithfield, Virginia, Vernell lived a life rich with love, laughter, and a spirited personality that endeared her to everyone she met. Vernell was the epitome of kindness, with a sassy flair that made her unforgettable. She never hesitated to speak her mind, sharing her thoughts with honesty and humor that could light up any room. Her warm heart was matched only by her incredible culinary skills, as she loved to cook, creating delicious meals. She also truly loved the Lord and her church family and enjoyed spending time at church. In her leisure time, Vernell found joy in doing word searches, challenging herself with puzzles that kept her mind sharp. She also had a passion for playing softball in her younger days. However, her greatest joy came from being surrounded by her family, who were her pride and joy.
Vernell G. Brown leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Ms. Brown was preceded in death by her beloved children, Rickie Gibbs and Rhonda Ralph, as well as eight siblings: James Lee Jr., Earl Brown, Willie Brown, Dorothy Davis, Lauretta Batten, Roberta Kea, Ruth Brown, and Rufus Brown.
She is survived by her three daughters, Shirlan (Sherman) Haskins, Denise Brown, and Tammy (Everett) Wells; two sons, Gennie (Tonia) Brown and Mark Brown; and four siblings, Nancy Sykes, George (Dorothy) Brown, Marion Smith, Edna Robinson and Wanda (Steven) Parker; 16 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
