Van Simmons, III

Van Simmons, III was born on August 12, 1964, to the late Van B. Simmons Jr. and Alberta Simmons in Jersey City, New Jersey. In his teenage years, his family relocated to Newport News Virginia. Van was a graduate of Ferguson High School. While living in Newport News, Van became a member of Cathedral U.H.C.O.L. under the spiritual leadership of Bishop William Blackwell, Sr. The Simmons family moved to Smithfield. It was there that he met and married Mary Simmons.

Van worked security at the packing plant. He also had a love for cooking and often cooked for the elderly in his apartment complex. Van was a sweet, kind soul who loved his family and friends. He was full of jokes and often pranked and played jokes on everyone. He touched the hearts of those he came in contact with and always genuinely showed love.

Van was an outstanding father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Van fought a good fight and during his complications he battled his illness with no complaints and always gave thanks and praises to the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Baby Santiago, his sister Tonya Johnson, and father Van B. Simmons Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Mary Simmons; mother Alberta Simmons; four daughters Shakilyah Crocker, Keosha Crocker, Trakylah Simmons, and Tamara Bowden; son TraKuan Warren; sisters Bridget Robertson (James), Tywanda Robinson (Ramel), and Nicole Jones; grandchildren Xavien, Ky’Azhia, Paxton, Ty’Zhon, Joh’Niyah, Joh’Sier, and Na’Shaun, Fraternity Brothers and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12pm Saturday, July 08, 2023 at Shivers Funeral Chapel.  Viewing will take place from 3-6pm on Friday July 07, 2023 at the chapel.  Please keep the Simmons Family in your thoughts and prayers.
