Sylvester Tyrone Hill, Sr.

August 30, 1953, the sun rose for Sylvester Tyrone Hill, Sr., mostly known as "Tyrone," was born at home in Windsor, VA to his beautiful mother, Ms. Vertie Mae Hill. He was raised in Windsor, VA by his loving mother Ms. Vertie Mae Hill and by his adoring (late) grandparents, Mrs. Estella Tynes and Mr. Alex Jones.

Tyrone attended and graduated from Georgia Tyler High School in Windsor, VA. While in high school and after graduation, he would work with the Crocker family on their farm. Later, Tyrone worked at the Gwatney Meat Packing Plant and moved on to work as a welder at the Newport News Shipyard where he was employed for 17 years, and he retired from due to illness.

August 1978, Mr. Hill married (late)Ms. Catherine Shivers, they had two children, a son, (late) Sylvester Tyrone Hill, Jr, and a daughter, Sheena Renee Hill. In the mid ‘90s, Mr. Hill had one of his legs amputated. Mr. Hill was never embarrassed about his disabled and didn’t allow it to stop him. If the grass needed to be cut, Mr. Hill would hop on his riding lawnmower to cut the grass. If groceries needed to be purchased, Mr. Hill could be seen whizzing by in his beloved Jeep Cherokee and to get his groceries, and anything his dear mother Vertie needed or wanted.

The sunset for Mr. Sylvester Tyrone Hill, Sr. was on the 23rd of January 2024 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA. He is survived by his mother, Vertie Mae Hill, daughter, Sheena Renee Hill, and grandson, Nathaniel Hezekiah Hill, and a host of loving relatives.

On Saturday, January 27, 2024, viewing will take place from 2-5pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. On Sunday, January 28, 2024, a Celebration of Life Service will be held 1pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. The interment will follow the service in Tynes Cemetery, Berry Hill Road, Smithfield, VA.
