Shirlie Atkins

Shirlie Atkins, 69, of Smithfield, VA entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was born April 14, 1948 to the late Pleasant Holmes and Cora Lee Atkins. He served two years in the United States Marine Corps. Once honorably discharged from the Marines, he became employed with Newport News Shipbuilding, in Newport News, VA. He worked for 9 ½ years and retired in the Blue Print and Drafting Department on disability. Shirlie was preceded in death by a sister;Belva Jean Atkins. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife and caregiver;Ida Tynes Atkins,daughter;Kimberly Bynum (Steven), two grandchildren;Dionna Atkins and Steven Bynum II, great-grandson;Jette Alexzander Atkins (all of Smithfield, VA),three sisters;Mary Picott Williams of New York, Alberta Clark of New York, and Miranda Gwaltney of Smithield, VA,onebrother;Herbert Holmes of New York,a very close nephew;Ricky Atkins of Wilmington, NC and a host of loved nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11am Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Emmanuel Baptist Church Smithfield, Va. Viewing will be held Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from 4-7pm at the chapel. Interment will be in the Emmanuel Baptist Church cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.
