THE AFTERGLOW
"I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;O happy memories that I leave when my life is done.
OUR TRIBUTE TO
Shirley Miriam Hall Robertson
The sun rose for Shirley Miriam Hall Robertson 91, on May 8,1933, and set on April 3, 2025, leaving cherished family members and friends to mourn her departure. Shirley was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to William C. Hall and Catherine M. Davis —who preceded her in death. After moving from Atlantic City to Ivor, Virginia, Shirley attended elementary and high school in the Southampton school district and was a member of the Little Gilfield Baptist Church with her family.
She began and retired from a successful career with the New York Telephone Company in New York City. She was united in marriage to Thomas "T.R./Dump' Robertson. She sadly lost her true love and soul mate in 2020 after over 50 years of matrimony. Also preceding her in death were two of her children, Michael Mitchell of Charlottesville, Va., and Avis Hall of Brooklyn, N.Y.
"Ms. Shirley," as she was affectionately known, was a faithful and active member of the Main Street Baptist Church of Smithfield, Va., for more than 30 years. She was a welcoming blessing to Pastor and Mrs. Harrison and their children upon their arrival at Main Street. She lent her services, selflessly, to the church and individually to many members in need, over the years.
Shirley's passions included sharing her cooking and entertaining friends. She all but refused to miss any church activities, especially since she lived within walking distance from her beloved church. She also loved traveling and shopping and had visited most states in the U.S. with her husband, Thomas. She devoted her latter life to seeing and helping with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her siblings who are gone to Glory include three brothers, Clifford Bernard Hall, William (Jeanette) Johnson, Jr., and Eric (Doretha) Johnson. Her surviving children are daughters Veronica (Jesse) Spencer of Carrollton, Va., Kathy Dixon of Washington, D.C., Anita Hall of New York, N.Y., and Arvada (Keith) Gary of Smithfield, Va. Her surviving sisters are Mildred (Lawrence) Turner of Suffolk, Va., and Rose Smith of Ivor, Va. Also mourning her loss is a host of friends and relatives, including 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Notably, she was quite active in her life up until illness impeded her lifestyle, just in the past few months. We would be remiss to not mention that beloved the same as family members was her beloved pet, Midnight. Midnight and his fellow canines — Bear, Morty, and, most recently, Gizmo — stayed near her until the end, uncannily providing comfort for us all during her illness and passing. TO GOD BE THE GLORY! — Humbly submitted with love, THE FAMILY
