Shirley Artis

The Lord has called to rest our beloved Shirley Ann Artis. Shirley was born in Isle of Wight County on March 9, 1947 to the late Raiford and Margaret Duck Parham. She attended school at the Historical Georgie D. Tyler High School in Windsor. She went on to marry the late Gilbert Artis and have 2 children out of that 52-year union. Shirley worked as a nursing assistant at Riverside Convalescent Center in 1991 and with the Isle of Wight Health Department in 2003. She also worked at Maxway Department Store, Smithfield. She also attended Holly Grove AME Church and Mount Calvary Church from time to time. Some of her favorite past time activities were eating with Priscilla(her daughter) at Cock-eyed Rooster and shopping at the thrift stores. Although Denise (her other daughter) didn't reside with them in the home, she was always mentioned and thought of in loving way. On October 25, 2018 she went to her heavenly home to join those that went before her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raiford and Margaret Parham, grandparents Joe and Fannie Mae Duck, three sisters (Joyce Mae Funches, Rachel Parham (infant sister), Goldie Bernice Elliott and a nephew Thomas A Scott Jr. She leaves to cherish her two daughters, Priscilla Ann Artis and Shirley Denise Artis; six sisters, Linda Scott(Thomas), Violet Brown(Wallace), Catherine Davis(Don), Deidre Picot, Rachel Turner(Jon) and Sophia Wilson(Stacie); four brothers, Raiford Parham Jr. (Cynthia), Maurice Duck, Alvin Parham and Martin Turner (Angelina), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The family and friends will celebrate Shirley's life at 12PM Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be held Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 from 4-7PM at Chapel. Interment will in the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery, Zuni. Professional Services entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.
