As the last grains of sand flowed from the hour glass of time, it brought to a close the life of my wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Ruby Lee Ruffin died on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Ruby was born on April 11, 1936 in Sussex County, Virginia to the late George Ricks and Hattie Holemon Ricks. Her early education was attained in the county. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Olive Branch Baptist Church located in Suffolk, Virginia. She later became a member of First Baptist Church located in Wakefield, Virginia. Ruby was a Watch Care member at Saint John Baptist Church located in Alexandria, Virginia. Ruby served as a member of the Senior Choir and the Pastor's Aid. Ruby is survived by her husband of 46 years, Haywood Ruffin, one son, William Ricks, one granddaughter, Ebony Anthony, one grandson, Tony, one step-daughter, Lorie Jennette, two god-daughters, Lawanda Hayes and Virginia Beamon, two god-sons, Shanon Hayes and Wayne Ethridge, Jr., three nephews, Allen Ellis, Adrian Ellis, and Audie Ellis, four great-nephews, six nieces, one sister, Carrie Ricks, one step-brother, George Ricks, III, two brother-in-laws, Charlie (Willie Mae) of Smithfield, Virginia, Christopher (Patricia), James (Phyllis), one sister-in-law, Queenie Power (Alfred) of Brooklyn, New York, two very special cousins, Grace Banks and Christine Beamon, and a host of cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 3pm at Main Street Baptist Church, Smithfield, Va. Viewing will be held one hour prior to funeral service. Interment will be in the Booker T Memorial Park cemetery in Wakefield, Va. Professional services entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.
