Roy L. Langhorne

April 26, 1938 — January 31, 2025

On Friday, January 31, 2025, an angel was dispatched to the bedside of our beloved husband, father, and brother Roy (Skip) Lewis Langhorne, 86, and led him aboard the glory train. He was one of ten children born to the late Nicholas Langhorne, Sr., and Jennie G. Langhorne. He was raised in Surry, Virginia, and attended Surry County Public Schools. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He was a kind, cheerful, hard-working man who loved the Lord and always wore a smile that would bring sunshine to your day.

Roy married Lydia Maureen Johnson on March 1, 1997. They lovingly referred to each other as “Sweetheart” and shared 27 years together. Roy served in ministry with his wife Lydia starting at Ferguson Grove Baptist Church, Smithfield, VA, under the leadership of Pastor James D. Charity Jr. until God called them to step out into ministry. They attended and were ordained under Born To Live Ministries, Norfolk, VA, by Bishop Thomas and Pastor Ruth Moore. Together they answered God’s call and established Reborn to Live Ministries Surry,VA, where Roy served faithfully, testified, and sang praises unto the Lord. Roy was also an honorary member and Deacon at New Hope Church of God In Christ, Norfolk, VA, under the leadership of Pastor Steven Wilson, Sr. This last year he traveled faithfully with Minister Jupiter Wilson to support and minister at the Boykins, VA location.

Roy retired from Luter’s Meat Packing Company after more than forty years of service. He was known by everyone as the “Peanut Man” for his perfectly made-to-order and packaged peanuts he sold daily. He also retired from Surry County Public Schools, Surry House Restaurant, and Surry Sanitation Department.

Roy was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Edna Young: siblings: Julia Paulette, Nicholas Jr., Mildred Johnson, and Claudette Eley; his stepchildren: Alvin, Norman, Conrad, and Donnell Young, Betty Peake, and Glenda Peterson.

Left to cherish his loving memories are his devoted wife Lydia Maureen; two stepdaughters: Antoinette Gilchrist (LeRon) and Loretta Chamberliss; thirteen grandchildren; two brothers: Garland and Ernest Langhorne (Michelle);three sisters: Geneva Beckett, Audrey Byrd (Louis), and Linda Ellis; two sisters-in-law: Geneva Langhorne and Deborah Johnson, a brother-in-law Wallace Johnson Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Roy always had a song on his heart. Some of favorite songs were “It’s In My Heart,” “He Touched Me,” “Lord, I Got to Make this Journey Somehow,” “He Is My Everything,” and “Sweet Beulah Land.” Roy’s voice was one of a kind, and will be immensely missed.

On Friday, February 7, 2025 viewing will take from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in the The Johnson Family Cemetery.  Please Keep the Langhorne Family in your prayers.
