Oretha Eley Allmond

Oretha Eley Allmond, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 17, 2018 at Consulate Healthcare of Windsor, Virginia. Oretha was the first of three children born on September 26, 1931 to the late Curtis Eley and Beatrice Bowers of Isle of Wight County Virginia. She was a native of Isle of Wight County, where she attended the Isle of Wight Training School through the eleventh grade. She was baptized at an early age at Chapel Grove Baptist Church. On April 24, 1948, she married the late Calvin P. Allmond of Windsor, Virginia. From this union, four children were born. She joined New Jones Grove Baptist Church in 1955 and served as a member of the Senior Choir, Sunday School teachers, and many other church auxillaries. She was an active member of New Jones Grove Baptist Church's Mission Ministry. She was also active in the Beautification Club and the Hospitality Club. She often represented her church at the Lebanon Virginia Baptist Church Association. She was a member of the Isle of Wight County Senior Citizens organization at the Nike Park Site, where she was active in the organization's Bible Study, Choir and Senior Citizens Club as a volunteer. She was a volunteer of Main Street Baptist Church Food Bank, the Tenants Association and Bible Study of Covenant Place, where she resided until her health declined. Additionally, she was a life subscribing member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was active in the NAACP along with her late husband for over 60 years. She enjoyed serving others, spreading sunshine, helping solve problems, answering quizzes, writing, reading, growing plants and playing dominoes and bingo. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Oretha worked as a housewife and supported her husband many business ventures, specifically Allmond Fuel Services. She was preceded in death by her daughter; Ellena Fisher, sisters; Pauline Tucker Woods, Beatrice Moore, and Barbara Jean Green. She is survived by her daughter; Carolyn Brinkley (Robert )of Chesapeake, Virginia, her son; Elgin Lodean Allmond of Fayetteville, North Carolina, her son; Marvin C. Allmond (Linda) of Laurel, Maryland, her brother; Curtis Eley of Windsor, Virginia, five granddaughters; Kenya Allmond, Robin Allmond, Dana Allmond, Ellena II, Melba, Angel Fisher, four grandsons; Tyrone, Jason, Michael, and Elgin Jr., twelve great grandchildren and a host other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12pm Saturday, November 24, 2018 at New Jones Grove Baptist Church Windsor, Va. Viewing will take place Friday, November 23, 2018 from 4-7pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the New Jones Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Viewing will take place Friday, November 23, 2018 from 4-7pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the New Jones Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
