MEMOIR OF

A Virtuous Saint

MOTHER MARGUERITE P. TYNES

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints.” PSALM 116:15

Marguerite P. Tynes peacefully entered her heavenly home early Sunday morning, January 5, 2025, with family by her side. Marguerite, affectionately known as “Mother Tynes” was born in Smithfield, VA to the late Mary Walker and Benjamin Walker. She is preceded in death by her late husband, Junius Tynes, her brother Otto Walker, and three sisters, Jacqueline Johnson, Nettie Johnson and Loretta Wells.

Mother Tynes received her education at Isle of Wight Training School and later built a fulfilling career at Smithfield Packing Company until her retirement. As a lifetime member of Mt. Tabor Church of God in Christ, Mother Tynes was a pillar of her church community and a woman of immense grace. She found her greatest joy in serving God, her family and her church. She was renowned for her culinary talents, delighting loved ones with her special dishes, including her signature three-layer chocolate cake. She cherished journeys with her church family and eagerly attended annual conventions. As the Church Mother Mount Tabor, she was admired not only for her elegant wardrobe and stunning hats but also for being a true woman of God. She was a source of wisdom and guidance, offering inspiration and support to the church members who she considered an extension of her family.

Mother Tynes’ legacy lives on through her four children: James P. Tynes (Claudia),Junius A. Tynes (Denise), Kelvin R. Tynes(Lorrie), and Joyce M. Tynes. She is also survived by 5 siblings: Luther Walker (Virginia) of Smithfield, VA; Milton Walker (Ruth) of Windsor, VA; Robert Walker of Upper Marlboro, MD; Ann Sumler (Michael) of Chesapeake, VA; and Mary Greene (James) of Rushmere, VA. She also leaves behind two sisters-in-love, Marion Walker of Windsor, VA, and Eunice T. Briley of Portsmouth, VA, her 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mother Marguerite Tynes lived with steadfast faith, assured and confident that one day she would wear her crown, don her robe, and rejoice in sharing the story of her journey to glory. Her ever-present smile, kind heart, and gentle spirit will be sorely missed. To God be all the glory for the precious gift of life He gave us.
