Margaret M. Simmons Butler

November 10, 1939 — May 25, 2014

On Sunday, May 25, 2014 at 11:40 pm, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Margaret Marie Butler Simmons, 75, entered into eternal rest and peace in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The Southampton County native was born November 10, 1939 to the late Isaac and Mabel King Butler and accepted Christ at an early age.Mrs. Simmons was a devoted member of Tabernacle of Praise FGBC of Zuni, VA., and was the oldest member of the church.She also sung with the Combined Voices of Zion Community Choir.She was a personal care assistant for Isle of Wight County Social Services for several years until she became ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold E. Simmons, two sisters; Gracie Russell and Mary Alice Moore and one brother, Samuel Butler Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory three devoted children.Two daughters and one son, Audrey Cary, SGM(Ret) Walter Jr., Newport News, VA; Vernita Rasul (Ismael), Suffolk, VA; Terry Simmons (Angela), Hampton, VA; six grandchildren, Daewon Cary and Crystal Cary-Williams, Sheena Stokes, Shanique and Darrius Williams, Kamai Simmons, one great-grandchild A'Dyn Williams, two sisters, Romine Warren (Edwin II), Thelma Saunders both of Zuni; four brothers, Joe Butler (Francis), Melvin Butler, both of Zuni; Willie Paul Butler, Brentwood, MD; James Butler, VA Beach; three aunts, Joyce Bowers, Gladys Chapman and Odell Ricks, sisters-in-law, Delmas Simmons, Gloria Woolridge, Paulette Simmons, Catherine Butler, brothers-in-law, Rev. Larry Simmons Sr. (Julia), John Simmons (Serita).Special Godmother-Ruth Edwards, Zuni; God-son Milton Dean Kindred, Surry; a longtime beloved sister in Christ Minister Ann Neverson, Petersburg; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Windsor, VA with Bishop Nathaniel Gomillion officiating.Interment will be in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.The Family will receive friends at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4-7 pm. A Celebration of Life will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Windsor, VA with Bishop Nathaniel Gomillion officiating. Interment will be in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4-7 pm.
