                                                                The Life of Lucy Daniel

On March 29, 2023, at Chippenham Hospital, the Lord dispatched one of his angels to get one of his chosen children to escort into his heavenly kingdom.

Our family matriarch, Lucy Olga Ellis Daniel was born on July 11, 1929, in Surry County, Virginia to the late Charlie Ellis and Gracie Parson Ellis. She was educated in Surry County in a one room segregated school, named Hollybush. There were fourteen total different schools at that time for “Colored.”

At the age of 9, she joined Cypress Baptist Church, and she has been a lifelong active member. In her early years, she served on the choir and usher ministry. At the age of 21, her sister Anne requested that she relocate to live with her in New York City for better opportunities. She always reminded her children of how indebted she was to Anne for that opportunity. Those opportunities led to employment in factories, office clerk, food service, domestic, and health care services.

In 1956, she married the love of her life, Dennis Daniel. From that union three children were born, Janice, Alonzia, and Paulette. They instilled the importance of having an education in their value system. Dennis died in 1966 and she remained a widow until her death. She leaves to cherish her memory, her three children and her granddaughter, Grace.         

Lucy was preceded in death by three sisters Anne, Doris, and Rosa and three brothers Ulysses, Joseph, and William. She also is the last survivor of all her in-laws and first cousins. Some of her interests were reading, watching televised baseball games, dining, arts/museums, festivals and especially vacationing at the beach with her daughter Paulette.

Her doors were always open for family members where they shared lots of fun and laughter. Throughout her life, she maintained a youthful spirit. She was always willing to lend a listening ear and give good advice. She often referred to her and her children as “My Lil Family.”

Sister Lucy Daniel’s love and kindness will be missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace having lived a life filled with love and memorable experiences.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00am on Saturday, April 08, 2023 at Cypress Baptist Church, 849 Runnymeade Rd, Elberon, VA 23846. Viewing will take place on Friday, April 07, 2023 from 3-6pm at Cypress Baptist Church. Please keep the Daniel family in your thoughts and prayers.
