Larry T. Wood

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Thomas Wood of Newport News, Virginia, who passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, VA. He was 79.

Larry was born May 13, 1943, in Mecklenburg County, VA. He was the son of the late Theotris Wood and Hattie Jane (Freeman) Wood. Larry graduated from West End High School, Mecklenburg County, VA in 1964, and decided to move to Newark, NJ where he met and married the love of his life, Beatrice Alma (Seward) Wood in 1966. They would have three sons. Eager to grab onto life and all it had to offer, he moved his family from the city to his wife’s hometown of Newport News, VA in 1980. He would later tap into his entrepreneurial spirit to start a business. By 1983 his trucking company, L. & Wood, Inc., would be established and operating successfully throughout Hampton Roads and beyond. Larry’s passion in life was God and his family. He was a dedicated member of Sweet Haven Holy Church of God in Carrollton, VA, where he served as a trustee, usher and choir member. He enjoyed working on his trucks and helping people. He will be greatly missed, and most remembered as the patriarch of his large, loving family.

In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, three sons, Derrick Theotris Wood (Juana), Alvin Wood (Alexandra) and Markeith Thomas Wood (Cecily), all of Newport News, VA; two sisters, Diane Wood of Chase City, VA and Janice Christian of Richmond, VA; sisters-in-law, Thelma Pearl Kindred of Hampton, VA and Catherine Branch of Newport News, VA; and brothers-in-law, John Seward (Della) of Smithfield, VA, Michael Seward of Newport News, VA; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Wood and Harry Franklin Wood; and four sisters, Rosa Mosley, Carolyn Lardeva (Wood) Cameron, Theresa Dale Harris and Deborah Hope Robinson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, at Sweet Haven Holy Church of God, 22188 Brewers Neck Blvd., Carrollton, VA. Viewing will be held Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.
