Joseph D. Cotton

August 1, 1948 — April 15, 2022

Joseph Dennis Cotton entered eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 15, 2022. He peacefully departed from us at the Consulate Nursing Facility, Windsor, Virginia. Joe was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on August 1, 1948 to the late Wylie and Mary Cotton. He was married to the late Sheila Cotton and to that union was born one child. Joe received his education from the Isle of Wight County Public School System. During his earlier years he was employed with the Smithfield Foods, Inc. in the UPS Transportation Department. Joe loved his family and everyone was secretly called his favorite when he approached them. He loved spending time with his grandchildren especially his grandson Jamare whom he had the most time to share. They enjoyed watching wrestling and westerns together. He was a member of the Little Zion Baptist Church. Joe was very outgoing and passionate and excited about life. He loved people and had a smile and jokes that would light up a room. He will sorely be missed. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila Cotton; his father Wylie Cotton; his mother Mary Cotton; two sisters, Emma Addison; and Annie Shivers; two brothers, Wylie Cotton Jr., and Earl Cotton. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Joseph Cotton; one step "daughter", Alana (Lona) Gibbs; three grandchildren, Malya Cotton, JaMare Riddick and Cyanni Gibbs; one sister, Virginia Williams and one brother, Nathan Cotton, both of Smithfield; seven sisters in law, Arnita Saunders, Brenda Slade, Patricia Brown, Mary Gibbs, Cathy (William) Green, Bridget (Linwood) Fulgham, and Jamie Gibbs; one special cousin, Joe Cotton and a special friend, Loretta Massenburg and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. A Graveside Celebration of Life will be held 11am Monday, April 25, 2022 at The Baptist Cemetery, Berry Hill Road, Smithfield, VA. Public Viewing will be held 2-4pm Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Shivers Funeral Chapel, Smithfield. We solicit your prayers for the Cotton family.
