“The Life”
Our beloved James Michael Green, Sr. gained his angel wings on Monday, June 10, 2024. The angels encamped and he is resting in his heavenly home. A servant of God has taken flight.
James “Mike” Green was born February 5, 1967 to Jessie Green and Eugene Powell. He attended Suffolk Public Schools. He had been employed at Newport News Shipbuilding, Smithfield Packing, Farm Fresh and various Food Lions as a certified meat market manager in VA and NC. He had part time jobs with Golden Corral and his favorite was assisting our Pastors with Shivers Funeral Chapel. This is where he became affectionately known in surrounding communities.
As his health issues continued, he made the choice to work part time at Food Lion on Airline Boulevard in Portsmouth, VA. He loved detailing cars for his select few. He gave them the greatest car care and would often hear from God when cleaning cars. He took great pride in the work he did.
“The Love”
“Mike” was a faithful servant of God at Solomon’s Temple Church. He served on several ministries through the years to include Servant Leader Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Sons of Solomon Male Chorus, Education Ministry, Married Couples Ministry and the one he cherished the most and took pride in was Pastor Shivers’ Armor bearer.
Mike had a passion for softball where he would play on several different teams in different cities. Softball became a huge part of his life. He could run like no other. Many came out to enjoy the games and watch him play. He also enjoyed coaching basketball and would participate in the “Old School Classic” including all the “older” Suffolk schools until his health became a major concern.
“Mike” loved to joke and did not care if you did or not, he was going to make you laugh. He loved to shop on weekends with his wife Wendy all day long. Everyone had a story about Michael Green. He was just mischievous in a good way. He also enjoyed playing baseball and blackjack on his phone. He loved talking with his mom and watching his boys on their motorcycles. A little-known fact is that he was a great skater.
One of his favorite songs which he led was “It’s in My Heart to Serve the Lord.” It was because of his great love for God that he was able to love so deeply and so right. He loved learning about God, good preaching and singing. He would even “fake” preach around the house as we called it.
“The Love”
“Mike” was preceded in death by his father Eugene Powell and his sister Patty Green.
“Mike” leaves to cherish his greatest memories his wife of twenty-five years Wendy Green, his queen; daughters Latoya Diggs and Nikita Carter (Jason); sons James Michael Green, Jr., Michael B. Green, and Leontae Green (son/nephew); his mother Jessie Green; two grandchildren Jordan Elliott and Jackie Carter; godson Ramir Lockett; brothers Wille “Cat” Turner, Roy Young, James Young (Louise), and Curtis Green; sisters LaTasha Godwin, Helen Young, and Betty Ann Green; brother-in-law James D. Ballard (Felecia); sister-in-law Kelly Ballard and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and faithful male friends until the end. You know in your heart who you are.
