Herbert Nelson Rawls Jr.

Herbert Nelson Rawls Jr. was born on November 19, 1945 to the late Herbert Nelson Rawls Sr. and the late Cora Tremel Rawls, in Isle of Wight County, VA. He was raised in Carrsville, VA and was the oldest of seven siblings. Later in life, Herbert battled chronic respiratory illness Yet, as many knew and witnessed, Herbert was indeed a FIGHTER and in the spirit of Herbert, he battled back strong from this illness several times! Herbert departed this life on earth and was brought to Glory on March 14, 2018. Herbert, known to many as "Herb", joined Pulaski Baptist Church in Virginia at an early age. He attended Georgie Tyler High School in Windsor, VA., where he achieved Valedictorian. He also excelled in sports such as basketball and baseball; a sport he loved and would later go on to coach. Herb attended Virginia State College in 1964 and in 1967, he married his "college sweetheart" Vernell Mosley. Of this union came two children: Dawn and Michael Rawls. Herb continued his education at Morgan State University in Baltimore, majoring in Business. In 1968, Herb joined the United States Army (1968-1975). A proud Vietnam Veteran, he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He worked 22 years at W.R. Grace Inc. becoming Shift Forman and 4 years at Bechtel Industries as a chemical contractor. Herb loved fishing and gardening. He won several awards for his gardening and would often share the "fruits of his labor" with friends and family. Herb was also an avid traveler with his wife. A long time Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity member, he received the "Man of the Year" award for service. Herb was very generous and giving towards friends and family. Lively, humorous, and often the "life of the party", many also knew Herb to be cleverly charming and flirtatious towards the ladies! He adored his grandson his "pride and joy", Mike Jr. ("Smootie"). HERB LEAVES TO CHERISH HIS MEMORY Wife of 50 glorious years: Vernell Mosley Rawls, Two children: One daughter, Dawn Michele Rawls and one son, Michael David Rawls. Two grandchildren: One grandson, Michael David Rawls Jr. and one granddaughter, McKenzie. Four loving siblings Three brothers Melvin Rawls (Caroline) of Portsmouth, VA, Ray Rawls (Thelma) of Trenton, NJ, Terry Rawls of Carrsville, VA and one sister, Nadirah Gwen Rawls Sharif of Charlotte, NC. Herb was preceded in death by two younger siblings, Beverly Rawls and Sandra Jeanette Mayfield. Herb also leaves 12 nieces and nephews, who all adored their "Uncle Junie", as they called him. Brother-in-law Willie Mosley Jr. (Margaret) of Red Oak, VA. One adoring pet dog, Sasha And a HOST of great nieces and nephews and cousins, along with MANY loving friends and caring neighbors, who were also like family. A Celebration of Life service will be held 1:00pm Monday, March 26, 2018 at Pulaski Baptist Church Carrsville,Va. Veiwing will be from 11am - 1:00pm prior to the Celebration of Life service. Interment will be in the Pulaski Baptist Church cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.

Interment will be in the Pulaski Baptist Church cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.
