Henry Young Sr.

Henry Owen Young Sr. transitioned from this life on January 10, 2020 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA.

Born January 10, 1937 Henry was raised in Surry County, VA where he graduated from Luther Porter High School. He also attended Virginia State College and later moved to Smithfield, VA where he met and married his lovely bride Roxie in 1961.

Henry worked several local jobs before beginning his professional career at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1971. During this time, Henry's fondest memories were those times he served as a member of the Shop #11 Tiger Team where he was able to travel and work in several cities across the USA, London and Scotland. In 2006, Henry retired after working 35 years, 7 months, 29 days and 4 hours and anyone who knew him would tell you he was a very dedicated worker who was proud of his time as a Shipfitter.

When Henry was not working or spending time with his family, he could be easily found at one of his favorite fishing spots. As an avid fisherman, Henry would offer to take you fishing with him anytime and would come home to clean and cook his fish immediately. Fishing was no doubt his passion. Next to fishing, Henry also enjoyed working in his garden and watching the Cleveland Browns play football.

As a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Henry sung in the male chorus and served as a member of the Parking Lot Ministry.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Essie Young and seven siblings.

To treasure Henry's memories, he is survived by his wife Roxie Virginia Young of Smithfield, Virginia; three children, Toni Preston, Newport New VA, Henry Young Jr (Saundra), Martinez, GA and Wanda Jenkins (Todd) Louisville KY; five grandchildren, Stacy, Quinton, Jeremy, Tiphanie and TJ; three great grandchildren, Criston, Camden and Raelynn; six siblings Francis Young, Gladoria Warren, Darlene Wyche, Christine Battle, John Young (Etheline), and Frank Young, three sister in laws Marie Young of Dendron, VA, Lillie Smith of Surry, VA, and Catherine Thompson (Donald) of Smithfield. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am Wednesday January 15, 2020 at Emmanuel Baptist Church Smithfield, VA. Viewing will take place Tuesday January 14, 2020 from 4-7pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Professional Services entrusted to Shivers Funeral Chapel.
