Gene Spratley, Sr. of 610 Cedar Street departed this life on November 21, 2019. He was born in Isle of Wight County (Smithfield, VA) on October 5, 1933. He was an oysterman and fisherman at heart and he loved being on water and taking friends out on his boat to fish and socialize. He was a man of many talents and many words. As an entrepreneur he owned a restaurant at Tyler's Beach; He was a handyman and a carpenter. He tried his hand at building. He loved to talk and socialize and never met a stranger. Anyone who knew him knew of his love for food. As a member of First Gravel Hill Baptist Church, he often talked about and spoke highly of his extended family. In a way he was the family historian and he knew just how to explain each person's kinship/relation to the family. He was predeceased by his parents James and Dora Spratley; his son Gene Ray Spratley, Jr. and sisters Eloise McCain and twin Jacklyn White. He leaves to cherish his memory his children Deborah Sheppard (Wayne) Shern Clarke, Rodney Spratley (Jenifer) Evette Brooks (Ronald) three sisters Doretha Lee, Peggy Coleman (Arthur) and Evelyn Spratley and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1 pm Tuesday November 26, 2019 at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church. Viewing will take place Monday November 25, 2019 from 4-7pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel.
