The Life of Frederick Lee Roberts
MSG Frederick Lee Roberts (Ret.), US Army, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, at the age of 76 at Commonwealth Senior Living. Born on April 27, 1948, he spent his entire life in Smithfield, Virginia—a town that held his heart and where he built a lasting legacy of love, hard work, and dedication.
Frederick was known for his unwavering work ethic, warm smile, and sense of humor that could brighten any room. After graduating from Westside High School in 1966, he pursued a degree in Business Administration at Virginia State University, graduating in 1974. He proudly served 27 years in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8). His leadership and commitment earned him deep respect from peers and subordinates alike. During and following his military service, Frederick dedicated over 30 years to Newport News Shipyard in the RADCON department as an instructor and supervisor, where he was valued for his expertise, integrity, and dedication.
Outside of work, Frederick was passionate about football and admired fast cars. He delighted in sharing stories with friends and found joy in life’s simple pleasures, often tinkering under the hood of a car or enjoying a game on television.
Family was everything to Frederick. He is survived by his sister, Katherine Roberts Chapman; his brother, Donzell Roberts; his longtime special friend and companion, Ms. Valerie Hicks; and his children, Casey M. Roberts (Renelle), Jayson M. Roberts, and Gina Perkins of Martinsville, Virginia. His four grandchildren—Daphney Roberts, Casey Roberts II (CJ), Jaziah Perkins, and Giana Perkins—were his pride and joy; they will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He also leaves a loving extended family, including nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Frederick’s laughter, commanding presence, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
