Frank Lee Smallwood 83, transitioned from this life on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 in Sentara Obici Hospital.
Frank Lee Smallwood was born on July 21, 1941, to the late William Robert Smallwood Sr. and Viola Wyche Smallwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his siblings: Norman Smallwood, William R. Smallwood Jr., James M. Smallwood, Leonard Smallwood, Velma Savage, Gertrude Spratley, Viola V. Cary, Sarah R. Huggins, Madgelene Smallwood, and Brenda J. Smallwood. Frank was also preceded in death by two of his children, Nelson Gray and Janet Vaughn.
Frank leaves to cherish his memory his beloved sons: Steve Smallwood (Felicia), Ricardo Cutler, and Anthony Simmons; his sister, Lucille Eley; his brother, Purcell Smallwood; and his sister-in-law, Shelia Smallwood. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Steve Smallwood Jr., Jasmine Smallwood, Jontae Smallwood, She’Neka Gray, and Chyna Gray, along with 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends
Frank had an extensive and fulfilling employment history. He began his career at Smithfield Meat Packing Plant before proudly serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his service, he dedicated many years to the Newport News Shipyard, where he eventually retired and began to enjoy the later years of his life. During his retirement, Frank remained highly skilled and active. He found joy in gardening, fishing, and working on all types of machines and equipment. His talent for building and fixing things kept him busy, as he was always working on new projects. Frank also enjoyed simply getting in his car and taking a ride, often stopping in to check on family and friends later recalling these visits with his signature phrase, “Hey, I rode by your house a few days ago!”
Frank was a man of grand stature, strong character, and unforgettable laughter. His independence and unwavering work ethic remained evident until his health rapidly declined. He will be remembered not only for his many skills and talents but also for his kind heart, dedication to family, and the lasting impact he left on those who knew him.
Frank’s presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
On Wednesday, March 26, 2025 viewing will take place from 3-6pm at the chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00pm Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery. Please keep the Smallwood family in your prayers.
