Edwin Stanley Goodwin, Jr. transitioned from this life Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Harmony of Harborview, Suffolk, VA. Edwin Stanley Goodwin, Jr. was born in Newport News, VA to Edwin S. and Jewel Edwards Goodwin on August 9, 1950. After the untimely death of his mother, Edwin and his sister went to live with their maternal grandparents in Smithfield, VA on Highway 258. He joined Sandy Mount Baptist Church at an early age. He graduated from Westside High School in 1968. He was also an avid sports fan. He studied at Bowie State College in Maryland. Later Edwin enlisted in the U. S. Army where he was an Offset Pressman specializing in printing maps for the U. S. Map Service while stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. While there, he studied Military Justice, Code of Conduct and CSR. He achieved the status of Sharpshooter (Rifle) and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After being discharged, Edwin was employed with the Newport News Shipyard for several years. Edwin then joined the U. S. Navy. At that time, he was assigned to the USS Spiegel Grove. When he was relieved of his sea duty, he became a military policeman, patrolling the Washington Navy Yard. During his time there, he achieved the Distinction of Expert Marksman and once again he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was later injured in the line of duty and eventually was identified as a Disabled Veteran. Upon discharge from the U. S. Navy, he was employed at Fort Eustis at the Skeet Range, Go Kart Track and etc. When he retired in 2012 after thirty plus years, he was the manager of the Gym. Edwin was a devoted father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Left to cherish his memory are children Diamond D. Hunt of Carrollton, VA, Ryan Tobias of Hampton, VA, grandchildren Alonzo C. Taylor (Monika), Jerrica C. Taylor, Joydan C. Taylor and Jade A. Hunt all of Smithfield, VA, sibling Edwina G. Williams of Portsmouth, VA, eight great-grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00am on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing will take place from 2-5pm on Monday, May 30 2022 at the chapel. Please keep the Goodwin family in your prayers.
