Early Saturday morning, July 9, 2016, God called our beloved Edmonia C. Johnson from her early labor to her heavenly reward. Edmonia was born November 16, 1925 in Nansemond County to the late Sara Jane and William Claiborne. She was a devoted home maker. She loved and took pride in caring for her family and many times she extended that love to many of the neighboring children. She was well known for her old-fashioned home cooking. She was a very creative person, making arts and crafts to beautify her home. She was also a self taught seamstress often designing clothes for her children and sewing them by hand. Edmonia was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church. She attended regularly until her health failed. Preceded her in death was her husband; Joseph Johnson, affectionately know as "Big Son"; two grandchildren, Dontae Johnson and Alisha Ledbetter. She leaves to cherise her memory, 7 devoted daughters; Iola Brown (Willie) of Sedly, Va, Margaret Young, Mary Johnson, Evelyn Johnson, Mary Thomas (Fred), and Virginia Hall (Thomas) of Windsor, Va, and Helen Johnson of Smithfield, Va. 4 devoted sons; Elder Joseph Johnson (Apostle Patricia) and James Johnson (Cassandra) of Windsor, Va, Rief Johnson and Clinton Claiborne of Smithfield, Va. 1 brother-in-law; Otis Johnson of Sedley, Va. 19 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves ahost of nieces, nephews and dear friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held 12 noon on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 4pm - 7pm at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Christian Home Baptist Church cemetery, Windsor, VA.
