Dorothy G. Butler departed this life peacefully on August 16th, 2024 . at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, VA. She was born July 22, 1932 in Surry County VA. She attended Surry County Schools.

Dorothy married her one true love, the late Joe A. Butler Sr. They were married on August 11, 1951and shared 35 loving years of marriage together.

Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Ivor, Va for many years until obtaining membership at Emmanuel Baptist Church. She remained an active member there until her health began to decline.

Dorothy worked for many years doing domestic work for many families within the Smithfield community. In her free time she enjoyed cooking, doing word search puzzles, doing yard work, reading her Bible and taking road trips. Dorothy adored her family and often hosted Sunday dinners and holiday gatherings at her home. Dorothy’s kindness, thoughtfulness, and love was felt by all who knew her. She had a humble spirit and despite any struggles she faced she rarely complained and always spoke of the goodness of God’s grace.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, George and Albertha Charity; her husband, Joe A. Butler Sr.; her daughter, Geraldine Johnson; three sisters, Ruby Lee Haskins, Shirley Brown and Edith Stringfield; daughter-in-law, Virginia J. Butler; and son-in-law, James Booker T. Johnson

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted sons, Joe A Butler Jr. (Alvanett) and Daniel Butler (Lisa); three granddaughters, Anita Roberts (John), Alicia Lashley (Jason), and Ebony Butler (Crista Henderson); one grandson, Cordaryl Butler; three great-granddaughters, Nadirah Martin, Ava Lashley, and Heiress Haskins; three great-grandsons, Isaiah Martin, Justin Lashley and Ahmir Butler; four bonus grandchildren, Victoria Brown (Vince), Victor Garrett, Vinesha Forches, and Virgil Garrett; six bonus great-grandchildren; Amari Garrett, Cordelia Garrett, Malachi Brown, Zaiden Garrett, Jayce Madison, and Vercia Garrett; one sister, Alice Jones; a special granddaughter, Angel Washington (Perry); and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and special friends.

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, Viewing will take place from 3-6 PM at Shivers Funeral Chapel. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 12 PM a Celebration of Life Service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 11150 Emmanuel Church Rd, Smithfield, VA 23430, Smithfield, Virginia 23430. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church,14465 Racetrack Road, Ivor, VA 23866. Please keep the Butler Family in your thoughts and prayers.
