Doretha L. Major

Mother Doretha L. Major was called from labor to reward on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.

A native of Surry County, Doretha was born September 30, 1952, to the late Jesse and Clara White Lane, the middle child out of eight children. Her parents, husband, and son preceded her in death.

She attended Surry County Schools, graduating from Luther P. Jackson High School in 1970, furthering her education at Tidewater Community College. On March 9, 1972, Doretha was united in Holy Matrimony to Elder George R. Major and to this union three children were born: Christina Doretha Major, George Alan Major (deceased), and Jessica Liane Major.

She was employed with Bayport Credit Union, formerly known as Newport News Employees Credit Union, until she retired in 2017. Mother Doretha was called to ministry at Mt. Tabor Church of God in Christ alongside her husband in 1974 where she began her own ministerial appointment. She served on the board for the Ministers, Deacon’s and Trustee’s wives, was appointed as the Church Decorator, participated in YPWW and Sunday School, assisted with the Drama Guild, taught crafts during Vacation Bible School, assisted with Hospitality, and most recently appointed to the Mother’s Board.

She leaves to cherish her memories: Her daughters, Christina Doretha Major, and Jessica Liane Major both of Smithfield, VA; four grandchildren: Devin Tyre’ Major, Chalice Irene Major, Caron Alan Major, and Brandon Louis Jones; daughters-in-law: Natasha Ramos of Killeen, TX and Corey Major of Hampton, VA; son-in-law: Linwood Holloway of Suffolk, VA; three sisters: Vertelle Nedd of Hampton, VA, Brenda Lane of Surry, VA, and Irene Batten of Surry, VA; four brothers: Jesse Lane Jr. (Maxine) of Hampton, VA, Roy Lane (Carleen) of Surry, VA, Frankie Lane (Sheila) of Surry, VA, and James Lane (Carrie) of Windsor, VA, five sisters-in-laws, one brother-in-law, and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church family.
