On Thursday March 21, 2024, Clementine Smallwood was called home to share her voice with God. "Tine," as she was affectionately known, was born on July 5, 1954 to the late Parker and Virginia Butler in Ivor Virginia.
As a child, “Tine” was member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Smithfield, Virginia. Tine attended Isle of Wight public school. In 1968, “Tine “moved to Philadelphia where she attended the school of arts for drawing. In 1973, “Tine” moved back home to Virginia. She later met and married her husband Purcell Smallwood in 1981. She lived in Smithfield and later moved with her children in Hampton, VA, where she resided until her untimely death.
"Tine” was employed with Isle of Wight School system as a master bread maker for twenty years. She also worked at DAV Thrift Store while courageously fighting her battle with breast cancer. She became a member of Cathedral Word Ministry in 2016. She was very talented when it came to drawing, Nevertheless, "Tine" was best known for her angelic voice. Tine loved to sing and shared her voice with the choir. She loved her family and friends, but she cherished her children and grandchildren, always making sure they were safe and sound before she went to bed at night. In recent years, she enjoyed being around her children, going to Rosie's, and spending time with her besties or "sisters" as she would call them; Bloise Bailey, Deborah Clayton, Clara Butler and Jean Brown. She was sweet and very caring to all she crossed paths with.“Tine” is preceded in death by her parents, Parker Butler and Virginia Butler; sister, Virginia Fountain; brother, Alvin Butler; her daughter, Rhonda M. Butler; grandchildren, Fernando Jones Il and Kyron Z. Butler; and great nephew, Keonta J. Fountain.
“Tine” leaves to forever cherish her love and beautiful memories her husband, Purcell Smallwood of Surry, VA; her children, Marvin Butler and Hope Smallwood of Hampton, VA; her brother, John Butler of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren, Destiney Butler (Oscar), TaKyren Smallwood and Nira Butler; nieces, Sky Fountain, Edna "Neicey" Fountain, Shonda Fountain and Makaia Butler; nephew, Kevin Fountain Sr. (Tameka); a special friend, Will Newby; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
On Friday, March 29, viewing will be held from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. On Saturday, March 30, 2024, 12pm, a Celebration of Life will be Live Streamed on the Shivers Funeral Chapel Facebook page. In person is by INVITATION ONLY.
