In Loving Memory
Charlie Robert Smith, 98, was born on February 19, 1926 to the late Charlie and Virginia (Winnegan) Smith in Newport News, Virginia. On Monday, March 4, 2024 at 2:24 p.m., Charlie, often referred to as “Pop” by his family and friends, was called home to be with the Lord.
“Pop” served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. After serving in the military, he attended Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia and the Maryland Technical Institute (MTI) in Baltimore, Maryland. His career choice led him to continue serving others as he embraced his desire to become employed by the U.S. postal service in Newport News, Virginia where he served for 33 years, and remained a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union for more than 70 years.
Additionally, “Pop” devoted his time to the Isle of Wight County Board of Social Services and held the position of Trustee Emeritus at New Grafton Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia. After moving to Smithfield, Virginia he became and remained a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church until his passing.
“Pop” was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. Pop’s greatest joy in life was being surrounded by family and friends - he cherished the opportunity to entertain guests in his home.
“Pop” is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Josephine Scott Smith of Nash County, North Carolina. From this union, came three sons: Adrian “Squeaky” of Falls Church, Virginia who preceded him in 2011, Michael (Calandra “Levie”) of Chesapeake Virginia, and Robert Rondell (Twana) of Columbus Ohio; two grandchildren, Imani of Richmond, Virginia and Joshua of San Francisco, California; one aunt, Mable Wrenn of Smithfield, Virginia; one sister in law Doretha Robinson of Hampton, Virginia; and a special cousin, Ray Cuffee (Vada) of Chesapeake, Virginia.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
